In line with its six areas of focus which include basic education and literacy, Rotary Club of Ikeja has commissioned the installation of an E-learning application in its adopted Ikeja Junior High School.
Speaking at the commissioning, the President Rotary Club of Ikeja, Rotarian Olumuyiwa Fagbola said it is a unique e-learning infrastructure that can only be found in private schools, but the club has brought it to a public school.
“I am sure that this will probably be the only public school in Lagos State that will have this infrastructure and there is no doubt that this application will further improve the performances of the students particularly in mathematics and science subjects.
He added that the intervention is one of the six areas of focus of Rotary in the area of Basic Education and Literacy and the strategy in the club is to continue to embark on projects that are sustainable and have direct impact on the beneficiaries.
“We have observed over the years that because of the way private schools are structured, more expenses, more facilities, students tend to do better than the students in public schools and that’s why they need this infrastructure in public schools, so that they can compete extensively in terms of the way they learn and the way they comprehend.
“And we are not just leaving it at that, we will make sure we monitor the students, their performances in all subjects in the next two years to really know that they are taking advantage of this infrastructure because our expectation is that in the next two years their results, their performances in all subjects is better than what they have now.”
It would be recalled that apart from these new facility, the club had in September, 2019 donated two blocks of classrooms to the school with the provision of tables, chairs, white boards, board markers and cleaners.
Speaking at the programme, District Governor, District 9110, Rotarian Jide Akeredolu urged the students to make use of the facility with keen interest in all what they learn because that is the only way they can excel in their subjects.
“You have no reason to fail because with this application, you will be competing at the international level.
“Your generation is different and that is why we want you to move to the information technology stage which we believe can make you rise above all odds and become what you want to become in the future,” he told the students.
Commending Rotary Club of Ikeja for the donation, Rotarian Akeredolu said it was a good idea that they don’t only provide the building but also tools that can make the students excel in their studies.
The representative of the Commissioner for Education, Lagos State, Dr. Olufunke Oyetola thanked Rotary Club of Ikeja for the feat disclosing that the Club had just keyed into the transformation agenda of the Lagos State government in which introduction of information technology to education is number seven on the agenda.
She urged the student to take the advantage they have over other schools in the state very serious, “they have brought technology to you and you must make judicious use of it because it makes learning very easy.
The Tutor General and Permanent Secretary, Education District six, Mr. Ebenerza Olusanya also thanked the club for grooming the students for the future.
“We appreciate what you are doing in the state which we believe will help the children as they proceed in their education.
In his remarks, the Principal of the school, Mr. Safiyu Sikiru disclosed at the event that the club donations to the school has started yielding dividends as the school won the award of the best school in the Education District Six annual merit award for 2018/2019 academic year.
“We are now the best school among 104 schools in the district and I also got the award of the best principal in the district. I believe this was made possible because of your assistance towards the school.”
Demonstrating the application to the students and guests at the event, the Chief Marketing Officer of Chips, Bits and Bytes Limited, Mr. Adebiyi Fashoyin said the infrastructure is a multi-sensory solution which will help the students assimilate faster than before.
He assured the school of constant evaluation of the facility as well as training of teachers so that they can easily impact on the students.
A Past President of the Club, Chief Olusegun Osunkeye also presented ten students with scholarship covering books and other materials till Junior Secondary School 3.
The school presented the Club with an award at the event.
